Antique/Ephemera hunting - Bone-marrow jar

Happy February!

Spent the weekend antique-hunting, and am disappointed to say that the yield was the worst ever. Found some Royal-event souvenir mugs (Queen's Silver Jubilee commemm. mug and so on), a soup bowl with a recipe for Lamb Broth printed on it, and a "Virol" bone-marrow jar, about 26cm high and in excellent condition. It's labelled "A Preparation of Bone-Marrow An Ideal Fat Food For Children & Invalids". I'm guessing that the last is probably Edwardian (though I hope it's Victorian!).

My favourite ephemera-website shows a price of GBP75.00 for the Virol jar -
http://www.barefootdays.co.uk/shop/antique-stoneware/stoneware-virol-jar/prod_4.html. I paid GBP3.50. I believe bone-marrow was used as a children's food supplement as it was high in protein, and in adults as it lowered LDL. I don't know how much it is used today - apparently it is considered a delicacy roasted, and veal bone is a very popular dish. My knowledge about "Virol" also remains sketchy. Their tagline/caption used to be: "Virol. The way back to good health. " It was "sweet and sticky", and I think there was some controversy surrounding the use of bone marrow as food. I'd like to know if the company/product/manufacturer is in existence today. I did find a company named Vitol, but no Virol. Any clues?

  1. Hi ReNu! You certainly are interesting! So, you enjoy collecting? You have an interesting site, and I found myself engrossed in your description of the Vitrol vase...I find the Edwardian, Georgian and Victorian eras highly intriguing. Hope you embed a pic of the jug...I did see the link, though...Keep up the good work, ReNu...Sweet Little Angel (Penny)

  2. wow i love antiques, its so cool your a collector. Thought i'd drop by and thank you for adding my blog, i really appreciate it and i also thought i'd let you know that i've created a writer's forum to coincide with the blog

    http://thewriterschronicle.forumotion.net/forum.htm

Basically its a forum where writers can come and discuss their yays and woes, share advice or discuss the publishing world. I'd love it if you could drop in and have a look (it was only set up yesterday) and maybe let your friends know if they're interested.

    thanks

  3. Hi, ReNu! Thank you so much for stopping in and reading an excerpt from my book and giving me your feedback...Really appreciate the additional info on the Chalet School series...I assume the books are British in origin...Can you tell me the name of the author(S) or the name of the publishing company so I can follow up on the internet...An ISBN number (if available) of your favorite Chalet book would be helpful...I could see if there are any in print...Maybe Amazon has a sneak peek available....

L.M. Montgomery...she's from Anne of Green Gables fame, isn't she? The Blue Castle book looks interesting....

I see one reason why you want to write a military novel: Sharpes Gold, I notice, is a military series...Do you think you have a past life link to some military era?...sometimes that's where our deep interests in particular points in history arise...Well, just a theory...I look forward to your next post. In the meantime...Happy collecting!
